Telling Your Mom You Are Moving Out With No Job Lined Up

How do I tell my mom I'm moving out when I don't have a job yet?

She is not doubting you, she is doing math

When a mother hears "moving out, no job," she is not insulting you. She is running numbers she has run before, usually about herself, and coming out scared.

Arguing with the fear does not work. Answering the math does.

Walk in with three numbers

What you have saved. What the month actually costs — rent, deposit, food, phone, transport. How many months the first number covers the second.

Three numbers change the entire conversation, because they move you from "I want to" to "here is what I have worked out." Most of this argument is lost by showing up without them.

Name the fallback before she asks

The question she is holding is "what happens when it goes wrong." Answer it before she has to ask, because asking it is what turns the conversation into a fight.

Say where you would go, what you would cut, and at what point you would call it. A man who has already thought about failing does not sound reckless — he sounds prepared.

Bottom line: Do not open the conversation until you can say your savings, your monthly cost, and your fallback in three sentences.
