Dating & Relationships
My girlfriend wants to move in together and I'm not ready. What do I say?
She is not asking about a lease. She is asking whether this relationship is going somewhere, and moving in is the nearest available proof.
If you answer the lease question, you will win the argument and lose the point. You have to answer the question she is actually asking, which is about direction, not address.
Most men handle this by stalling. You get vague, you get busy, you let the topic die and hope it stays dead. It never does — it comes back louder, and now your silence is part of the evidence.
Name the actual reason. "I want this to work, and I do not want to move in while I am still sorting out my money" is a real answer. "I just think we should wait" is not an answer, it is a delay with a nicer coat on.
A boundary without a date is a rejection in slow motion. If your hesitation is about a specific thing — a job, a lease ending, savings — say what it is and roughly when it changes.
And if you are honest with yourself and there is no timeline, that is the actual news. Not wanting to live with someone is information about the relationship, and the kind thing is to let her have it now rather than in a year.
